At this Summit, empathy activists explore how to build the Wholistic Empathy Movement—an approach that embraces the whole person and the whole society. Together, we’ll work to make mutual empathy not just a practice, but a core personal and cultural value.
Creating a Culture of Empathy
Join this Summit if you are ready to roll up your sleeves and help build the Movement. The Wholistic Empathy Movement is a transformative force in addressing the growing disfunction, fragmentation and polarization in modern societies. When we empathize with each other it starts an constructive cycle of human values such as; mutuality, listening, dialogue, care, openness, trust, connection, effectiveness, creativity, innovation, etc, etc.
At its core, the movement seeks to reorient how individuals and groups relate to one another, shifting from transactional, adversarial and authoritarian interactions to ones rooted in mutual listening, deep dialogue, understanding, constructive collaboration and seeing our shared humanity.
For empathy to become a primary cultural value, it needs sustained, coordinated effort across multiple domains. A movement brings all groups together across the social and political spectrum who support this vision. It also provides the organizational structure needed for long-term cultural transformation rather than short-lived initiatives.
Think of the Bigger Picture
For you presentation, think in terms of the bigger picture of building a Wholistic Empathy Movement instead of just focusing on personal empathy growth shift the perspective from "me" to "we," which brings several advantages:
1. Scaling Impact
Personal empathy is powerful in one-on-one relationships.
An empathy movement creates cultural, systemic, and institutional changes that can ripple out to affect millions of people.
The bigger picture recognizes that empathy isn’t just a personal trait, but also a collective practice that can reshape communities, organizations, cultures, and societies.
2. Sustainability
Personal empathy can fluctuate depending on stress, circumstances, or energy.
A movement creates structures, communities, and practices (like Empathy Circles, trainings, or public campaigns) that help sustain empathy even when individuals struggle.
3. Cultural Shift
When we only focus on personal empathy, empathy may remain a private virtue.
By building a movement, empathy becomes a shared social value—something celebrated, taught, and expected, like justice or equality.
This makes empathy normative and widespread rather than random and scarce.
4. Collective Problem-Solving
Big challenges (polarization, climate crisis, inequality) cannot be solved by individual empathy alone.
A movement brings people together to practice empathy across divides and to generate collective wisdom and cooperation.
5. Resilience and Support
Growing empathy on your own can feel lonely or overwhelming, especially in a competitive, adversarial culture.
A movement provides community support where people reinforce each other’s empathy practices and prevent burnout.
6. Multiplying Leaders
Focusing only on oneself risks making empathy growth an inward, self-help project.
A movement trains and empowers many leaders, multiplying the number of people who can spread empathy practices outward.
In short: Personal empathy builds empathic individuals, but a movement builds an empathic society.
